The proved species is not identifyable any more. Possible are Murex brandaris (zool. correct: Haustellum brandaris), M. trunculus (zool.correct: Hexaplex trunculus) or Purpura lapillus. Today there is a purple colour still being used in Mexico of the snail Plicopurpura pansa, belonging to the same family.
